Child Brides
July 9, 2011 No CommentsThe blog below is based off of information from this article.\n\nIn certain cultures, allowing your child to wed is not an uncommon occurance. The article mentioned above consists of an interview with a photographer named Stephanie Sinclair who did a series of photos of child brides in various cultures in order to get the word out to the public that this is going on. The photos show heartbreaking images of very young girls with children of their own and husbands four times their age (one husband being only 25 years old). The interview and images were hard to take in, but very informative at the same time. One of the most saddening pieces of information in this whole interview has to be the reason to why these families allow this to happen:
“I have found that most families know in their hearts that this is not good for their children. But there are many outside pressures that contribute to their decision to marry off their children, such as poverty, wanting to create family alliances, and in some cases a need to settle debts. In all cases gender disparity has played an unmistakable role.”
