As a graphic designer, I am constantly trying to find ways to attract a reader or viewers’ attention. What I have found becoming a larger part of design is lighting and contrast. Contrast has always been a huge part of design because contrast draws attention to the subject of the design, and now I am noticing many ads and artwork are focusing a lot on lighting as well. Lighting can obviously draw attention to something, but it can also add so much more to your work. Light also attracts certain moods, so very harsh lighting or very focused lighting might portray a dark feeling or very tense. A softer light or more spread out portrays a pleasant, calming mood. Lighting can also make your work have more depth, with a focus point of light in a work of art, you create depth and make it more realistic as well as more interesting. So the next time you are working with designs, play around with different lighting effects and different amounts of light in your work and see how it works with the contrast of your photo. You will find that your work will look much more realistic and have more depth than ever before.
