Marketing Department Blog: The Art of Networking

November 23, 2011 No Comments

Networking. It”s a corporate buzzword that is thrown around constantly, but not many people—especially young people—actually know what it entails. And as networking becomes increasingly important in the business world, the art of networking is a valuable skill to learn.

Start with personal contacts

“It”s not what you know, it”s who you know.” I loathe that saying, and I hear it all the time. Unfortunately, (or fortunately depending on your point of view) this phrase is at least partly true. Personal connections can kick-start your career or grow your business if you utilize them the right way. This is a great place to start your networking.

For those seeking employment:

With the economy in a downward spiral, it is becoming harder and harder for recent graduates to find employment. The rules of our parents” generation no longer apply. A killer resume and cover letter may work for some, but many are finding nothing but dead-ends with this method.

This is where your personal contacts come into play. Ask friends and family if they know someone in your field. If they do, ask for their contact information. You may have to call or email two or three times before you get a response. Be persistent, not annoying. After you receive a response, try setting up a meeting face-to-face to discuss professional advice. Most people will be happy to help, and the information they give you can be very valuable. A few days later, call, email or write a personal note thanking them for their time. Keep in touch with them, and after a few correspondences ask if they know anyone who is hiring. Chances are they do, or can direct you to someone who does.

For those seeking to grow their business:

The process is similar to the process above. Ask family and friends if they know anyone in a field you want to target. Set up a meeting, and get to know the person. People do business with those they trust, so don’t be afraid to chat about your background and hobbies. Offer to help them out with their business ventures, as well. The best professional relationships benefit both parties. If you can refer their business and they can refer yours, you”ll have a match made in networking heaven.

Attend Networking Events

These events can benefit both those seeking employment and those looking to grow their business. You can find events to attend in your area just by doing a simple Google search. While at the event, focus on creating good conversations with a few people. Think quality over quantity. Don”t just grab as many business cards as possible and head for the door—aim to make connections. If you had a good conversation with someone, follow up with a call or email a few days later.

Quick tips for better networking:

1. Be yourself. If you”re trying too hard or acting phony, people will notice.

2. Be confident. Even if it is your first networking experience, don”t freak out. Relax and let the conversation flow.

3. Know what you”re talking about. Be knowledgeable about your business or field. Chances are people will ask you about it.

4. Step outside your comfort zone. Attend events in a part of town you”re not familiar with. Talk to people in a drastically different field than yours. You may be surprised by how many connections you make.

5. Limit your alcohol. Though it may be tempting to cut loose at an event, especially if it is at a bar, limit yourself to 2 or 3 drinks. Save your party pants for the weekend.
