Dress Code Dilemma

September 20, 2011 No Comments

As the TriLeaf Handbook continues to evolve behind the scenes, a number of policy decisions must be made. Each decision, though possibly trivial, must be given adequate consideration, since all team members will be held to the standards, rules, and guidelines outlined in the completed handbook.

With this in mind, the handbook debate took on the subject of dress code. In researching other business dress code policies, I realized there were two schools of thought on the topic: Some businesses and organizations functioned with only a vague dress code policy, while others spent the time developing (and hopefully) enforcing detailed guidelines. Which dress code would best fit our industry, our organization, and our people?

In favor of keeping our team members happy and creating an all-inclusive, detailed employee Handbook, we decided to create a more detailed dress code. With the Handbook growing (seemingly) daily in length, we worked to create a policy that was both comprehensive and easy (and quick) to understand. The result of our hard work and collaboration is a dress code to be proud of! We worked as a team to develop guidelines suitable for the workplace, while also meeting with approval from our team.

My advice for those tackling a similar endeavor: get feedback from those being affected by the decisions. All dress code decisions (no matter how trivial) were discussed first and this process leant itself to creating a dress code that can be adhered to by all.

What’s your advice for creating an adequate dress code policy?
