Sustainability at the Dinner Table
June 19, 2011 No CommentsDo you enjoy seafood? If so, I have something that you should think about the next time you order some at a restaurant. An article at npr.org brought something to my attention that I never really thought about before. Just because the type of fish you are ordering at a restaurant is on the menu, does not mean that there are plenty in the sea. For all you know, you could be eating the last of the species for dinner. Cod, for instance, has apparently “dropped to unprecedented low levels”, according to the article I mentioned above. In the article, a chef speaks about what to look for when you are shopping for fish. He suggests gazing into their eyes and see if they seem to be gazing back at you, or if they look sunken in. This is one way to tell if the fish is fresh or not. He also goes into more detail which I’d rather just let you read for yourselves. After reading the article, let us know what you think? Will this effect what you order the next time to go out to dinner?
