Missouri River Relief
May 6, 2011 No CommentsMissouri River Relief is proud to be Missouri Stream Team #1875
Missouri River Relief is a grassroots, volunteer and equipment-based organization dedicated to reconnecting people to the Missouri River through hands-on river clean-ups and education events.
The organization emerged organically from a group of people in mid-Missouri who simultaneously recognized the need for engaged stewardship of the Missouri River and the desire of citizens to take part in watershed solutions.
Inspired by a video of Chad Pregracke’s Living Lands and Watersbarge clean-up crew, this group of Missouri River lovers put together a coalition of public, private and citizen stewards that brought the barge up the river, holding the first massive Missouri River clean-up at Easley, MO, in 2001.
Since that time, the organization has grown each year. To date, MRR has hosted 68 Missouri River clean-ups, bringing 14,208 volunteers to clean 592 tons of trash from 667 miles of the river. We have participated in and hosted clean-ups in six states, from the Mississippi River to Yankton, S.D.
2011 will be the 10th anniversary of Missouri River Relief, and we are planning big things to celebrate our accomplishments, show our appreciation to those that have helped along the way, and build our network of riverfolk. We will again be chartering the Living Lands and Waters trash barge, this time conducting a two month clean-up from Kansas City to St. Louis!
The next upcoming event is this Saturday, May 7th
The tri-state Siouxland area loves their river, and a group of local organizers has been working with us for to develop their own annual Missouri River clean-up event.
