The Facebook Takeover

June 17, 2012 No Comments

There has been a lot of buzz around everyone’s favorite social media site over the last few weeks. With the company going public there has been a lot of speculation about how the social media site will last, how its users will be affected, and why Zuckerberg got married the day after hitting the stock market.  The stock prices for Facebook started high, but immediately prices started to fall.  This would only make a huge difference to you if you own a lot of stock, like 100,000 shares (at least that’s what the radio told me).

Every time I get on the internet, I feel like I see something new about Facebook popping up somewhere on the web. Recently, they began compiling news stories that your friends are viewing and bringing them to the top of your feed so that you don’t miss anything. Now, they are expanding this to videos. They’ve compiled these stories into boxes and called them “trending.” There is no way to get rid of these boxes or get this feature off your feed (if you’re like me, you hide basically everything from your feed that isn’t pictures or status updates) and it could clog it up even more. What do you this of this feature?

Why I feel that Facebook is taking over the world:

  • We no longer talk face to face with our friends- the instant messaging, wall post, messages and other features on Facebook keep us very well informed about the goings on in our friends lives without actually talking to them.
  • There is no need to just go out and find a good deal; companies post to Facebook- You just log onto Facebook and at an instant you know which restaurant has a dinner special and which is promoting a coupon. You also know that you can get a special Facebook coupon for some clothing stores as well as restaurants.
  • Facebook is the first thing you talk to in the morning and the last at night- If you are like me, you immediately check Facebook when you get up cause you didn’t want to miss anything that happened while you were sleeping. You also want to stay up with what everyone is doing in the moments leading up to you going to sleep. Its called an obsession, addiction, or whatever you want to call it, Facebook has taken over our lives with our constant need for information.

Do you think Facebook has taken over? Do you like another social media better than Facebook? Would you add anything to the list?
