Improv: The Net MacGyver
September 21, 2011 No CommentsOf all the skills that are important in programming, improvising is one of the most useful. Like most jobs, sometimes not all the tools needed are available to you when building a website, so finding a cheap, competent workaround is the next best thing. Improvising in websites could be the method that saves you a lot of headaches.
It’s actually a better way to get acquainted with something, because it forces you off the rails and you’re mostly on your own. You’re faced with a problem that conventional methods couldn’t solve so now you have to find some way to get whatever it is you need done. The perks mostly come from the fact that you are solving your problem, with the added bonus of getting to know what you’re working with a little better.
Improvising doesn’t always work sadly, and learning the system is still the best way to get things done. But in a situation where time is pressing and it’s down to the wire, finding a viable workaround could save you a lot of trouble.
