The Importance of a Well Designed Business Card

December 5, 2011 No Comments

Someone this past week asked me whether the importance of a business card has depreciated with the age of Google and the creation of social media. Would someone really dig up a card or prefer to connect with someone via LinkedIn or follow someone on twitter? While some might say that the online world is enough to replace the business card, I still have my reservations and believe in the importance of a physical business card.

First Impression

Since your business card often makes that all-important first impression, it is essential that you give it attention. Avoid the mundane. While the information on business cards is fundamental, their appearance is paramount. Stock, design and ink colors all matter. In every kind of business undertaking, you want to stand out from the pack and give yourself an edge.

Serves as a recall tool

How can someone expect me to remember everything about the conversation at a networking event? If you are enterprising, (obviously, that’s why you are here) you do attend gatherings in your niche or industry. At any such occasion you should network with like-minded people, at least ten to start with. Now, do you think without a business card it will be easier to recall everyone you met at the event?

Promotes your Brand the right way and Promotes it the way YOU want it to.

A business card is an additional opportunity to promote your brand. Relying on the lead to recall your exact name, search Google, follow you on Twitter and explore you just reduces the chances he or she will ever connect with you. Through your card, you can direct the person on what information you want them to know first about you and which is the best form of communication for you.

Ice Breaker

First things first, a business or visiting card can be a good tool to start a conversation. The exchange of business cards with potential customers is the most painless method for breaking the ice in new relationships. Plus, the act is neither aggressive, nor attached to any obligations.

And remember, for an effective business card the card should divulge exactly what you are selling. It should be very clear on the card what you have to offer. Often, a company name by itself does not accomplish this fundamental mission. However, a catchphrase on a business card can effectively do the trick. Look upon your business card as a portable promotion for who you are and what you do.
