Muse – A Collection of Inspiration
April 12, 2012 No Comments
There are a lot of websites out there that offer inspiration in the form of a clash of images for creatively blocked artists. Very few of them, however, give you an up close and personal look at the artist who created each piece of art. Muse is a website that takes things a step further and gives you a peek into the minds of the artists that inspire you.
As an artist, I have people ask me what my inspirations are all the time and it is easy enough to name out artists or works of art. The problem is, I have never actually thought about what inspires my inspirers. This is where Muse comes in – the idea behind the site is to put a greater emphasis on the artist as opposed to the artist’s work.
The website features “showcases” from hand picked contemporary artists dabbling in all sorts of media. Each showcase offers a handful of selected artwork and then is followed by the typical information for the pieces (name, creator, country, etc.). The unique thing is the following tab that offer you an exclusive interview with the artist which is more information about where they live and work and what sort of things inspire them. The most interesting things is the “Inspiration” tab. Here, the artist has provided links to other artists that inspire his or her work. This offers a virtual endless array of both classic and contemporary art that inspires that person who inspires you.
In my opinion, this website can really allow an artist to grow. So often I see people who are inspired by an artist with a specific style – there is nothing wrong with this. The problem comes when all the person does is emulate the style and gains nothing from it. With Muse, a person can grow their style based upon many different inspirations, not just one.
