Medical professionals have been trying to better the medical field. They are coming up with new technologies to make procedures easier and more productive. A Belgian company named LayerWise has come out and said they have produced an entire jaw. They used a technique called additive manufacturing that allows machines to make a particular item directly from an AutoCAD drawing. This technique uses metal powder particles that are heated with a laser to create an object’s layer by layer.
n elderly woman got a replacement titanium jaw with this new procedure. She had been suffering from progressive osteomyelitis, a bone infection, usually caused by bacteria which led to the surgeons to replacing the whole jaw. The surgeons involved with this produced had said that the potential of this new technique is great. Using this method, the surgeons can build an implant specific to the patient, and they can create complex shapes that don’t require glue or multiple parts.
